Overview
About General Ultrasound Imaging
General ultrasounds are used to assess the internal organs within the abdomen and pelvis. These scans help detect inflammation, obstruction, or other structural changes.
Your doctor may request a general ultrasound to investigate symptoms such as abdominal pain, unexplained bloating, changes in urinary habits, or abnormal blood test results. Because ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation, it is a safe first-line investigation and can be repeated as often as your treating doctor needs.
The examination is performed with you lying comfortably on an examination bed. A warm gel is applied to the skin so the transducer can glide over the area being examined, and images are captured as your sonographer works methodically through each structure listed in your referral.
What this scan covers
- Abdominal ultrasound – liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, abdominal aorta.
- Renal ultrasound – kidneys, bladder and urinary tract.
- Prostate ultrasound (trans-abdominal).
- Appendix ultrasound for suspected appendicitis.
