Diagnostic ultrasound, close to home
At UBM Scans, we provide a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound scans in Sydney to support patients and their healthcare providers. Our clinic offers a comfortable environment, flexible appointment times, and experienced sonographers with over 15 years of medical imaging expertise.
All scans are performed in our Menai clinic using advanced ultrasound equipment. Reports are sent directly to your referring doctor for review and follow-up.
- General Ultrasound Imaging. Assessment of the internal organs within the abdomen and pelvis, including the liver, kidneys, bladder, prostate and appendix.
- Gynaecology / Pelvic Ultrasound. Assessment of the pelvic organs, including the uterus and ovaries.
- Obstetric Ultrasound. Medical pregnancy ultrasound to confirm pregnancy location, estimate gestational age and assess your baby's development.
- Vascular Ultrasound. Evaluation of blood flow to detect narrowing, blockages or clots within the blood vessels.
- Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound. Examination of soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, bursae and muscles.
- Small Parts Ultrasound. Scans of smaller glands and soft tissue structures, including breast, thyroid, scrotum and salivary glands.
Scan types
The scans we perform

General Ultrasound Imaging
General ultrasounds are used to assess the internal organs within the abdomen and pelvis. These scans help detect inflammation, obstruction, or other structural changes.
- Abdominal ultrasound – liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, abdominal aorta.
- Renal ultrasound – kidneys, bladder and urinary tract.
- Prostate ultrasound (trans-abdominal).
- Appendix ultrasound for suspected appendicitis.
Preparation
- Abdominal ultrasound: Fast for at least 6 hours before your appointment. Essential medications are usually allowed.
- Renal and pelvic area: Drink 1 litre of water 60–90 minutes before your appointment and do not empty your bladder.
Gynaecology / Pelvic Ultrasound
Used to assess the pelvic organs, including the uterus and ovaries. Common reasons include investigating uterine fibroids, cysts, pelvic pain, or abnormal bleeding.
- Uterus – structure, lining and any fibroids.
- Ovaries – including cysts and follicle assessment.
- Investigation of pelvic pain.
- Investigation of abnormal bleeding.
Preparation
- Arrive with a full bladder: A comfortably full bladder is usually required. Please drink 1 litre of water 60 minutes before your appointment and avoid urinating.
Obstetric Ultrasound
Obstetric ultrasounds are an important part of early pregnancy and third trimester care. At UBM Scans, we offer medical ultrasounds to confirm pregnancy location, estimate gestational age, and assess the development of your unborn baby. This scan can also check for multiple pregnancies and provide reassurance in the early weeks.
Because UBM specialises in 3D ultrasounds, 4D ultrasounds and reassurance scans for expecting mothers, we understand the emotional significance of these appointments. Our sonographers combine medical expertise with advanced 3D/4D scan technology and a caring approach so you feel supported throughout the process.
- Confirmation of pregnancy location.
- Estimation of gestational age.
- Assessment of the development of your unborn baby.
- Checking for multiple pregnancies.
- Reassurance in the early weeks.
Preparation
- Arrive with a full bladder: A full bladder is usually required. Please drink 1 litre of water 60 minutes before your appointment and avoid urinating.
- Bring previous imaging: Bring any previous imaging relating to your pregnancy.
Vascular Ultrasound
These scans use ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and detect narrowing, blockages, or clots within the blood vessels.
- Upper limb – arterial and venous flow.
- Lower limb – assessment for DVT or arterial disease.
- Carotid ultrasound – blood flow to the brain.
- Aorta – screening for aneurysm.
- Renal arteries – blood supply to the kidneys.
Preparation
- Abdominal aorta / renal arteries: Please fast for 6 hours.
- Other vascular scans: No preparation required.
- What to wear: Loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being scanned. For a lower limb scan, shorts or loose trousers that can be rolled up are ideal.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound
Used to examine soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, bursae, and muscles. Commonly used to investigate pain, swelling, sprains, or suspected tears.

Preparation
- No preparation required: Wear loose clothing so the area can be easily accessed.
Small Parts Ultrasound
Scans of smaller glands and soft tissue structures.
- Breast ultrasound – used to examine breast tissue.
- Axilla – lymph nodes under the arm.
- Thyroid and neck – gland and soft tissue assessment.
- Scrotum – testicular structures and blood flow.
- Salivary glands – for swelling, stones or infection.
Preparation
- No special preparation required: Bring any previous imaging relating to the area.

Your sonographer explains each step as they go. You are welcome to ask questions at any point during the appointment.

The cost of an ultrasound varies depending on the scan type and complexity. Our team will confirm fees at the time of booking and advise on expected rebates. Some scans may also be eligible for private health insurance benefits, depending on your level of cover.
